Boundary Stream
Boundary Stream Mainland Island is situated on the eastern flanks of the Maungaharuru Range, about 60 km northwest of Napier. It encompasses the 702ha Boundary Stream Scenic Reserve and 100ha of private land. It extends from lowland forest at 300 metres above sea level to mountain forest. It is home to a number of threatened species including North Island brown kiwi, kākā and kōkako, New Zealand falcon and kererū.

Lake Opouahi
Lake Opouahi covers 6.27 hectares and is surrounded by a 3.2km predator-proof fence. The area is the site of the Pan Pac Kiwi Crèche which opened in March 2008. Since then 2000 students have had a kiwi experience here. The crèche is administered by ECOED. ECOED’s mission is to integrate outdoor education, environmental education and conservation in Hawke’s Bay. A 30 minute loop walk through regenerating native bush skirts picturesque Lake Opouahi. Bird life is abundant.

Early Childhood & Primary Education
Pukehou School is a full primary school in Central Hawke’s Bay. It attained the prestigious Enviroschools Green-Gold status in 2006. It began its Environmental Education journey in 2003 with a decision to have EE as the umbrella for curriculum delivery (with the exception of numeracy and literacy). The school has maintained this focus and aims to promote attitudes and values which motivate students to think and act more sustainably.
Lucknow Kindergarten has a wonderful ethos whereby practices reflecting social and environmental sustainability are part and parcel of their everyday activities. Their welcoming physical environment reflects the value they place on nature.

Kiwi Hatchery & National Aquarium
The HB Wildlife Trust operates the Kiwi Hatchery which breeds and raises Kiwi as part of thenational captive breeding programme and, for the introduction of Kiwi into many local Kiwi recovery projects such as Lake Waikaremoana, Boundary Stream, the Kaweka Ranges and Cape Kidnappers. Access to the breeding facility is usually restricted due to issues of disease control and disturbance to the birds. This fieldtrip includes a tour of the breeding facility including their incubation facilities. It is based at the Westshore Wildlife Sanctuary where, in January, a wide range of wading birds are present and there will be the opportunity to view them in their natural habitat.
The National Aquarium of New Zealand offers students a unique and stimulating educational experience outside of the classroom. Students have the opportunity to come face to face with aquatic animals, reptiles and Kiwis. Educational programmes involve students in interactive, hands on and enquiry-based activities, with programmes developed in line with the New Zealand Curriculum Framework and catering for all education levels. The Aquarium visit includes a behind the scenes tour.

Sustainable Business
Take a walk along the ‘cleaner production’ trail at the Eastern Institute of Technology and see how a medium sized organisation manages its policy of all green waste being kept on site. You can learn how the bokashi composting system works for an organisation of 350 staff and 7000 students. In addition to its waste minimisation steps you can see and discuss the Green Star features of EIT’s brand new Trades building complex. EIT was awarded the 2008 Hawke’s Bay Regional Environmental Award for Cleaner Production and is committed to sustainability in practice at an organisational level, and in its teaching.
Hawke’s Bay is famous for it’s primary produce – pipfruit, stonefruit, winegrowing – this sunny, Mediterranean climate provides the perfect conditions for a wide range of crops. Visit a major food processing operation, where several steps have been taken to protect the environment from detrimental effects. Learn about how fruit makes it’s way from the orchard to your local store, and how responsible companies can make this process more sustainable.

Sustainable Farming Practices
The farm owner has won farm forestry awards for the way he has protected areas of the farm, these areas will be able to be seen on the day. Additionally, approximately 50 ha of the farm (300ha) has been covenanted with a QEII trust covenant in perpetuity.
The farm is available to schools to use for outdoor education camps but has no ‘mod cons’, so is a back-to-basics environment. Participants will be able to see the way students have engaged with the environment to challenge their thinking and provide material for further learning back in their classrooms. One local high school uses it to develop confidence with Y9 students, intermediate students have used the camp for several years as an environmental learning area, but more recently a special school has adopted the area for an outdoor classroom and regularly brings students up throughout the year.

Visit a selection of Hawke’s Bay houses and gardens that have employed innovative and practical measures to reduce their impact on the environment. Meet the owners and/or designers of these properties and hear about their motivation for creating an eco home and/or garden and the positive results that they have achieved by choosing sustainability as a guiding principle. You will see many ideas in practice that you will be able to implement in your own home and garden as well as to incorporate in your workplace and working life.

Sustainable Winegrowing
Hawke’s Bay is the second largest wine region in New Zealand and home to some of the country’s best known wineries and almost 5,000 hectares of vineyards. The Winegrowing industry has developed national standards that provide a framework for wineries and vineyards to work towards improving sustainability. This field trip will include a tour of a sustainable vineyard with a leading viticulturist who will discuss the sustainable practices employed in the vineyard. The tour will then visit a sustainable winery to look at sustainable practices in the winery, in particular water treatment, energy use, packaging, biodiversity and compost use. This field trip will conclude with a private wine tasting.
